Euronorm and gastronorm dimensions

Standard-sized bins, containers and trays prove their worth day after day in the hospitality and retail industries. Because they have sizes that are seamlessly mat ched, they fit perfectly into different machines, storage locations and transport trucks. Thus, they increase your efficiency and reduce wasted time and costs. Worldwide the most frequently used standards in professional food are gastronorm (GN) and euronorm (EN).

Gastronorm dimensions

Gastronorm dimensions (GN) indicate the outer size of stainless steel containers used in professional kitchens. This is because stainless steel is easy to clean and itself excretes virtually no substances. Gastronorm containers are popular as “chafing dishes” to present a buffet. The containers then keep your food warm through indirect heating (“chafing” comes from the French “chauffer,” “to heat”). But these dishes are also suitable for storing and preparing hot, cold and even frozen food.

The basic size of GN is 325 by 530 millimeters. We call this GN-1/1. The other sizes are all derived from this starting point. GN-2/4, for example, is double the size of a quart 1/1, or 162 by 530 millimeters. In addition to the width and depth, the height of the containers also varies, from 20 to 200 millimeters. Thus, each container has a different capacity. You can find them all in the table of gastronorm dimensions below.

Gastronorm Dimensions and Table of Contents

The basic size is GN 1/1 with a dimension of 530 x 325 mm. All other sizes are derived from this. In addition to width and depth, the height of the containers varies between 20 mm and 200 mm, resulting in different content sizes.

Size (Width x Depth) 20 mm 40 mm 65 mm 100 mm 150 mm 200 mm

GN 1/9 (176 x 108 mm) 0,5 L 0,8 L

Only outside dimensions are standard for gastronorm bins. Manufacturers dare to use different angles and inside dimensions in production. Thus, the lid of one gastronorm container may not fit another, or they may not be stackable despite being the same size. We therefore recommend that you choose one manufacturer or brand when purchasing your gastronorm containers.

Euronorm dimensions

Euronorm or EN is a different set of sizes than GN. EN is mainly used for storage boxes and bins. You often see them in gray stacking containers. These bins are usually made of plastic, making them completely food safe. Euronorm has only four different sizes:

  • 200 x 300 mm
  • 300 x 400 mm
  • 400 x 600 mm
  • 600 x 800 mm
Euronorm dimensions

Thanks to the defined dimensions and solid design, Euronorm bins are easy to stack, on top of each other but also, for example, on pallets of 800 x 1200 mm and 1000 x 1200 mm. Euronorm is not only the standard for storage containers, but also for baskets for professional dishwashers and plates and trays for professional bakery machines. Thus, you will find baking trays and baking grids of 400 x 600 mm in our assortment.
